About Sara Coleman
I’m so glad you stopped by.
I created this site to collect stories, recipes, books, and more. But before you start browsing, let me introduce myself to you.
I’m Sara Coleman. Wife. Mom. Writer.
I also happen to be a Southern gal and occasionally my Southern accent slips through….oops.
My journey with writing is probably a boring one to most. But I like to compare it to a great love story which spans the ages. Perhaps this is a little dramatic, but it’s been an adventure to get to this point.

I remember when I was younger how much I loved to write stories. I even had a few teachers who encouraged me to continue writing along the way. I’m not sure what happened, but at some point I became a distracted teenager, and I stopped focusing on my writing.
Then I went off to college (to The University of Georgia – Go Dawgs!) and something funny happened. I become a complete weirdo who actually enjoyed writing papers. It was the only thing I was good at doing. My love for writing had been rekindled it seemed. I was convinced I would become a journalist and write compelling, thought-provoking pieces which would end up on the cover of some prestigious magazine. I changed my major to Journalism and was ready to conquer the writing world.
But the publications were never pursued. The stories were discarded.
Like so many college romances, the dreams of writing full-time fizzled as I had to make plans to find a “real job.” I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I had a Journalism degree in hand and a desire to make money.
I’d like to say at this point I chose to pursue writing, that despite the low pay and hard work I still pursued my passion. Unfortunately, it’s not true. Like the girl who chooses the “safe” guy over the one she’s truly in love with, I chose to follow the money and pursue a career in sales.
Over the years I’ve worked various sales roles – radio advertising, pharmaceutical, appliances – you name it, I’ve probably sold it. And despite working for a few amazing companies and having some success, I knew one day I would find my way back to writing.
And fortunately, the writing was waiting here for me all along. Waiting for the blogs to be written and essays to be crafted, even while I was being pulled in so many directions.
Along the way I’ve gotten married and had 3 children. I love all of them fiercely and wanted to find a way to support them while doing something I love. It was time to start writing and focus on my passion full-time. Thus, The Proper Pen was born! I’m now a full-time freelance writer and creator of The Proper Pen Blog.
As far as all those years I spent in the corporate world and in sales, I can’t say I regret a moment of it. It’s helped me connect with so many amazing people – many of them I now call friends. It also helps me bring a unique perspective to my writing, which hopefully you’ll be able to see throughout.
In between the carpools, dance lessons, football practices – life can get a little crazy. And when I’m feeling overwhelmed by all of my duties as a wife, mom, and writer, I turn to words once again. I love to try new recipes, get lost in great books, and think about the places I want to travel.
